About the Artist
Janet has a Bachelor of Science degree in Education from Southern Illinois University Edwardsville and worked in the banking industry for twenty years. While she has always
reveled in painting and drawing, it was not until after her retirement in 2004 that she became interested in watercolors. Since then Janet has dedicated much of her time to learning the medium through workshops and practice. Her paintings have been accepted and awarded in Juried National Exhibitions. She is a signature member of the St. Louis Watercolor Society, Missouri Watercolor Society, Illinois Watercolor Society and Watercolor USA Honor Society.
Janet resides in Staunton, Illinois with her husband, Jack where she enjoys painting and spending time with her family.
Artist Statement
I started painting with oils and after years of painting with that medium I converted to watercolors. The change was a challenge but worth the effort. The first thing I learned was watercolors have a mind of their own and I needed to become more flexible. As a novice I wanted a pleasant painting as an end result. Eventually I felt the need to compete on a national level which forced me
to work harder and find new ideas. Currently my goal is to paint for personal satisfaction. I no longer limit myself to transparent watercolors and may include other opaque water mediums which allow me the freedom to experiment. Many of my subjects are local scenes since I paint my experiences. However, the subjects of my works vary because I find so many things interesting and want to paint them.
I hope you will enjoy viewing my paintings.
